Celebrating 30 Years of Injury Prevention

The newly introduced Twitter graphics for CDC Injury Prevention embody the organization's commitment to injury prevention and commemorate three decades of dedicated efforts in this field.

Brainstorming Sessions

These sessions bring together a collaborative team of experts, designers, and communicators. In these dynamic sessions, we delve into injury prevention research, trends, and data to generate compelling ideas. Our team focuses on what creative potential with concise messaging that grab the audience's attention on Twitter.

Concept Sketching

During this process we begin visualizing and tackling the complex topics and challenges surrounding injury prevention and control. Through a careful selection of visuals, inclusive language, and culturally sensitive design, this step ensures that the graphics effectively engage diverse populations and inspire action towards injury prevention.

The Evolution of an Illustration

Illustration is an iterative process and an evolution. Shown here you’ll see an example of how we take a blank canvas and transform into the start of our social media concept, stroke by stroke.

Research shows that people who are socially connected with stable and supportive relationships are more likely to have better mental and physical health outcomes. This concept, focuses on the value of social connectedness and simple ways to improve it.

It involves the idea of going one step further to become more connected with your friends and family. For example, if you haven’t spoken to someone in a while, send them a text. If you’ve recently texted, give them a phone call. Connection methods can escalate to video calls and to meeting someone in person.

Creating Safe Places for Youth Animation

As the school year nears its end, ensuring a safe environment for children and teens becomes increasingly crucial. Access the resources available on the CDC Injury Center website to bolster these efforts.

Papercut Art to Highlight Bullying Prevention Efforts

The papercut art style, with its layered design, symbolizes the various actions and efforts needed to help. This approach aligns with the theme of "shining a light" on helpful actions, emphasizing that meaningful change comes from deliberate and thoughtful acts.

Begin by embracing vibrant visuals that already embody the journey towards healing and renewal, igniting dialogue and nurturing understanding within communities.

CDC NCIPC Priorities Video

As we know, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), suicide, violence, and overdose are connected. ACEs increase the risk of opioid misuse and suicide later in life. Individuals who misuse opioids also are at a higher risk for suicide. This video concept demonstrates the interconnectivity of these issues and explains why they are Injury Center priorities.

Because these topics are sensitive and potentially difficult, we understand how important it is to approach them with empathy and care. To that end, we’ve developed metaphorical concepts that attempt to soften their serious nature—at least visually. The voiceovers will be honest and open, but we’ve created visual analogies to make the topics more digestible.

From Thomas the Tank Engine to the Little Engine That Could, trains are an instantly recognizable metaphor. Most people will understand the visualization of a train moving along the tracks to reflect an individual’s mental health journey. “Life is a journey,” after all. Visually, a storybook illustration style will help soften the heavier topics (ACEs, opioids, suicide).
